On April 23, 1986, eight large stained glass windows were unveiled at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s administration building. Created by Ukrainian monumental artist Mykola Semenovich Linnik, these artworks visually narrate humanity’s progress in harnessing energy—from Prometheus’s gift of fire to nuclear fission and space exploration. Linnik was tasked with producing eight windows in what was originally planned as a two-year project. He and his assistant worked 16-hour days, seven days a week, for seven months straight. They managed every step—from unloading glass crates to melting lead in furnaces. Exposure to lead fumes affected Linnik’s health, and workers at the plant, aware of the 300 kilograms of lead he received, frequently approached him for hunting and fishing supplies. The windows also survived the massive Chernobyl explosion on April 26—just three days after they were finished. Photographer unknown

An engraver at work, 1960s Bone carving has been practiced in Tobolsk since the early 17th century. It was introduced by exiled Swedish officers captured during the Great Northern War, who turned to this craft for survival. They used mammoth bone, sperm whale tooth, and walrus tusk. The Tobolsk style became famous for snuff boxes sought after by high society, often decorated with scenes of sleigh rides pulled by deer or dogs. Photograph: Dean Conger
The Kalyazin Bell Tower, built in 1796 as part of the Monastery of St. Nicholas, now stands partially submerged in the Uglich Reservoir. It once housed 12 bells, including a 17,000kg bell commemorating Nicholas II’s coronation. In 1939, Stalin’s industrialization efforts led to the construction of the Uglich Dam, flooding the historic town. The monastery was lost, but the bell tower remained above the waterline.
