"Leading the Battle for Progress" (1980s) by Vladimir Miroshnikov distills the visual language of late-Soviet production mythologies into a single figure: the worker as vanguard of technological triumph. This oil-on-card sketch is one of the few surviving drafts from a period when most preparatory works were destroyed after printing.

The composition centers on a single worker holding a radiating compass. Behind him, the scene fans outward in a symmetrical burst: missiles, factories, bridges, power lines, and a marching group of workers bearing a red flag. The structure of the work is architectural—every form moves outward and upward.

The palette is restricted to deep red, ultramarine, ochre, and white. The colours are flat, opaque, and high-contrast. There is no illusion of depth. No modeling, no atmosphere. Not a realistic scene, but a diagram of progress. The style draws on Constructivist and Futurist strategies, repurposed for Socialist Realism.

The caption reads: “Time moves forward through the hands of masters—millions strong—who carry the banner into battle for progress.” Positioned front and centre, he drives industrial progress—factories and rockets rise on the strength of his resolve.

Miroshnikov lived and worked in Rostov-on-Don. He was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and worked extensively with Agitplakat Don on posters tied to state campaigns, including industrial growth, public health, and education.
