An engraver at work, 1960s Bone carving has been practiced in Tobolsk since the early 17th century. It was introduced by exiled Swedish officers captured during the Great Northern War, who turned to this craft for survival. They used mammoth bone, sperm whale tooth, and walrus tusk. The Tobolsk style became famous for snuff boxes sought after by high society, often decorated with scenes of sleigh rides pulled by deer or dogs. Photograph: Dean Conger
The Kalyazin Bell Tower, built in 1796 as part of the Monastery of St. Nicholas, now stands partially submerged in the Uglich Reservoir. It once housed 12 bells, including a 17,000kg bell commemorating Nicholas II’s coronation. In 1939, Stalin’s industrialization efforts led to the construction of the Uglich Dam, flooding the historic town. The monastery was lost, but the bell tower remained above the waterline. Women of Khinalug, 1968. Azerbaijan SSR Khinalug Village is over 5,000 years old and sits at 2,200 meters above sea level, nestled among tall mountains and rocky cliffs. For centuries, its remote location left it isolated from the rest of civilization, allowing the village to develop it's own language, culture, and traditions found nowhere else on Earth. The first records of Khinalug's people date back to the 1st century CE, appearing in the works of the historian Pliny and the geographer Strabo. Known to its residents as Kyat, the villagers trace their ancestry directly to the biblical Noah. Approximately 2,000 people live in Khinalug, divided into four families. Each family maintains its own graveyard and distinct patterns for carpets and clothing. Today, the villagers practice Islam, but their ancestors were once Zoroastrians. The homes in Khinalug are built in a stepped arrangement, with each house perched on the roof of the one below. The interiors are adorned with vibrant carpets, often woven by the women of the village. These carpets serve both as decoration and insulation against the harsh winter. In 2006, the construction of a paved road brought significant changes to Khinalug. Tourists began to visit, and some residents moved away.
